For the fifth annual Yale Day of Service organized in London by the Yale Club of London, we are pleased to announce that one opportunity to participate in the Day of Service is to volunteer to speak on a Careers Panel for state secondary school students who are part of the IntoUniversity programme. Come and join other Yale alumni to talk about your professional field in the public, private or non-profit sector; your own career path; the role of formal education; and the value of both work experience and volunteer service. Registration will open from 9.30, with IU staff providing us with an introduction and more detailed guidance on the format at 9.45. Panel presentations to students will start at 10.00, after which we will break up into smaller groups by field of interest. Following the end of the career panel, we hope that you will stay on for an informal lunch.
IntoUniversity's North Kensington Centre is easily accessible by public transport, with the nearest underground stations at Latimer Road (4 minutes walk) and Ladbroke Grove (11 min) on the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines or Holland Park (12 min) and Shepherd's Bush (15 min) on the Central Line. Residents' parking restrictions are in force on most roads near the centre on Saturdays between 8am and 1.30pm, with just a few pay and display bays directly outside the centre. However there is plentiful parking in the Westfield Shopping Centre in Shepherds Bush which is around a 10 minute walk from the centre. The cost for this is £8 a day on Saturdays.
IntoUniversity provides local learning centres in disadvantaged areas where young people are inspired to achieve. The charity aims to address underachievement and social exclusion among young people by offering an integrated programme of out-of-school study, mentoring, aspirational coaching, personal support and, in partnership with schools and universities, a specially devised FOCUS programme. IntoUniversity currently has 12 centres in disadvantaged areas of London, Nottingham and Bristol. In 2012, 77% of IU school leavers attained a university place compared to 34% of all maintained school leavers, 18% of which are on Free School Meals. Places at Russell Group universities were achieved by 12% of IU school leavers compared to only 8% of maintained school pupils, 2% of which are on Free School Meals.
