January 2014

A Year in Review

Dear members,

Happy 2014! We hope you've had a wonderful start to the new year and that 2014 is filled with great experiences and new adventures.

Last year, the YCL worked to further enrich our alumni network in London (and throughout the UK). Here's a quick recap of what the YCL and our alumni have been up to in 2013:
  • The Speaker Series hosted an amazing line-up of talks, with guest speakers such as Professor Andrew Hamilton, Professor Edward Kaplan, Dean Mary Miller, and Professor Ian Shapiro.  We hope to continue this momentum by kicking off 2014 with an event co-hosted by the Yale International Alliance, with Marc DuBois, Executive Director of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)/Doctors Without Borders UK on 12 February.
  • For the Yale Day of Service, Yalies gathered together to talk about their professional field in the public, private, or non-profit sectors on a careers panel for state secondary school students at IntoUniversity.  Great opportunities to volunteer for this year's Day of Service are currently in the works so, stay tuned!
  • The YCL ended 2013 with a bang by setting a new attendance record for its 10th anniversary Christmas Dinner.  A wonderful evening of delicious food at the Polish Hearth Club was the perfect way to close out the year. See below for more details on the event!
  • Our calendar was filled with more Young Alumni Events thanks to James Ford (SY '11), Lavanya Raghavan (SM '08), and Alice Shyy (ES '08), who all helped arrange events and liaise with other Ivy Club reps to co-host young alumni drinks and activities.
  • Seasonal nature walks brought British Bulldogs and alumni together to experience the countryside from Great Missenden to Amersham. We also hosted an autumn walk in the Chiltern Hills. If you haven't been to one of our walks yet, stretch those legs and grab some fresh air -- we look forward to seeing you at one (or more) of these events!
  • A new initiative, the YCL Art Circle, spear-headed by Beatrice Spengos (SY '02), brought an infusion of artistic inspiration to the YCL. Organised (and often guided tours of) exhibits allowed members to experience works by Lowry, the FRIEZE Art Fair, GASWORKS Art Gallery, amongst others.  Don't miss out on the first Art Circle event of the year at ART14 on 01 March.
Our calendar was pretty packed in 2013, but we could always used some additional help as well as ideas for more great events.  Please come to the next YCL Management Meeting on Thursday, 30 January to share any comments, questions, or ideas and help plan out an amazing 2014.

Hope to see you soon,
- The YCL

YCL Christmas Dinner 2013

The 2013 version of the Yale Club’s Christmas Dinner broke all attendance records for its 10th anniversary celebration, with 84 Yalies joining one another at the Polish Hearth Club on 3rd December. For the first time, we chose a buffet-style presentation with food provided by the award-winning Ognisko restaurant. Although many bulldog elbows (is there such a thing?) were thrown in this new environment to tackle the food, it turned out to be a no harm/no foul environment, and the ensemble quickly settled down to enjoy a holiday spirit only felt when the London Eli join together at this event each year.

The dinner was followed by a short talk given by Anne Applebaum (PC ’86), who provided us with her personal experience and related insights of visiting Berlin on the night that the Wall fell in 1989, as well as engaging in a spirited Q&A session to close out the evening. My thanks to Anne for joining us to speak at the dinner, and also a thank you to Michael Nagel (PC ’64), who had suggested the Polish Hearth Club as a venue for our 10th anniversary dinner, and acted as our host at the Club. For those of you that attended, please spread the good word to others that were unable to attend so that we may set another attendance record this December. I look forward to seeing you then!

- Erik Gustafson (ES '88)

Singing Groups in London 2014

In March, the Duke's Men and SOBs will be visiting London on their spring tours. We are working with both groups to see if they will be able to perform for the YCL during their visit. Furthermore, the Duke's Men are currently looking for housing for their stay and we would be grateful if you might be able to host any members of their group. As a homestay, all you have to do is provide a bed / couch / sleeping bag - nothing more. If you are willing, please do get in touch!

Furthermore, if you have any ideas for gigging opportunities (or links in the musical world), please let us know. The Alley Cats, Spizzwinks, and RedHot and Blue will also be visiting London in May, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Contact James Ford at james.ford@aya.yale.edu.

Young Alumni Events

In December, more than 100 recent alumni from a number of US colleges convened at Winter Wonderland to sample some steins of the Bavarian Village, to enjoy some of the park's rides and to get into the festive spirit. It was great to see some familiar faces and lots of new faces too - and by teaming up with some other colleges, we had a huge eclectic gathering of people. We would welcome feedback from anyone who attended as the organisers would be keen to repeat this event next year if there is sufficient interest.

Watch out for another joint college event in the Spring. In the meantime, get ready and get excited for Feb Club Emeritus on 20th February. If you have any ideas for future events or would like to get involved, please contact James Ford at james.ford@aya.yale.edu.

YIA/Speaker Series: Marc DuBois - Current Challenges to Humanitarian Action

Date: Wednesday, 12 February 2014
Bookings/more info: Click here to register for this event.

The Yale International Alliance and the Yale Club of London present the inaugural speech of the 2014 Speaker Series. We are very pleased and honoured to welcome Marc DuBois, Executive Director of Médecins Sans Frontières, who will be speaking to us about the concrete exigencies surrounding MSF’s current work in conflict zones around the world, as well as the more cerebral but no less challenging questions of aid: how and when it works and its impact on global politics.

Working in crisis, often in areas of conflict, was never easy. It is getting harder. From the risks of kidnapping or being directly targeted as enemies, to increasing administrative blockage by a reassertion of state sovereignty, to the lack of surge capacity and sustained funding for humanitarian operations, to the complexity of new strains of an old scourge like TB, the delivery of aid to those in crisis is becoming ever more difficult. ‘Current Challenges to Humanitarian Action’ highlights some of these challenges, drawing on both Marc's recent visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo and MSF's experience in hotspots like Syria, South Sudan and Myanmar.

Cost: £5 Junior Members; £10 Intermediate/Senior Members; £15 Walk-ins on the night
(100% of the proceeds will be donated to MSF.)
