About the Event:

The YCL Christmas Dinner is our traditional end-of-year event, a celebration of the Club's accomplishment and a festive gathering in the true spirit of our Alma Mater. Following on the success of last year's dinner, the same team has offered to organise again - so first, a huge thank you to Nikita/Danae/Kamilla/Marco.

Venue: In keeping with idea of trying new venues around the city, this year we will be at The Tattershall Castle on Embankment. The evening will start with a rooftop drinks reception and glass of prosecco (fear not: there is cover in case of inclement weather and other drinks will be available for purchase). Drinks will be followed by dinner downstairs in a private room. Capacity is strictly limited to 125 – and it is really is strict this year, so do book early.  We will also be asking you to choose your menu when booking.

Price: We will have the same pricing this year: the base price is £34 (includes three-course dinner and welcome glass of prosecco). To make the event as inclusive as possible, the Club is also offering subsidised tickets at £20 for anyone who feels this is more affordable.

Donations: To further support the effort to make entry-level tickets available, we are again asking for donations, should you feel you are able to contribute to the cost of helping your fellow alums to attend.

Drinks: The price mentioned above includes dinner and pre-dinner reception but drinks with dinner will have to be purchased separately.  The private dining room features bar that will be exclusively for the YCL, where bottle of wine, beer and other drinks can be purchased throughout the evening. These will count against a minimum spend on the bar that the Club has agreed to underwrite for the evening.

Raffle: Kamilla will again be running her excellent raffle.  Last year we had a wide variety of interesting prizes, from holidays to music lessons, so think creatively and do please get in touch with her if you have something to offer.  Proceeds will go towards entry-level tickets.

Speaker: We are very pleased that the hugely inspirational James Thornton ('76), founding CEO of ClientEarth, has offered to speak this year. James launched ClientEarth in 2007, sparking fundamental change in the way environmental protections are made and enforced across Europe. Now operating globally, ClientEarth uses advocacy, litigation and research to address the greatest challenges of our time – including nature loss and climate change. The New Statesman has named him as one of 10 people who could change the world. The Lawyer has picked him as one of the top 100 lawyers in the UK. In 2016, he was named as one of the 1,000 most influential people in London. He has twice won Leader of the Year at the Business Green Awards. The Financial Times awarded him its Special Achievement accolade at the FT Innovative Lawyers Awards. In the years since founding ClientEarth, James has developed an ever-growing team of environmental lawyers follow his innovative approach to clean the oceans, protect forests and the people who depend on them, and tackle the climate crisis at its root. He graduated from Yale, Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude, with departmental honours in philosophy.

'Much discussion of the environment has a negative focus. People often feel disempowered, that there is little they can do. We use law as a tool to mend the relationship between human societies and the Earth. We work in Europe and beyond, bringing together law, science and policy to create practical solutions to key environmental challenges.' – James Thornton
