start: Meet 8:55 am at London Charing Cross to catch the
9:10 am train to Leigh, Kent (journey time ~55 min)
Walk along the Eden Valley for the autumn foliage
Stroll the lawns, view the collections, or catch fish at Chiddingstone Castle
Pub lunch at the Castle Inn at Chiddingstone
Visit Anne Boleyn's childhood home, Hever Castle

end: Return rail to London from Hever Station from 4:30 pm onwards (end time depends on speed of walking, length of lunch and castle visits, depth of mud, &c.)

Please note: Wear boots suitable for varied and possibly soggy terrain (farmland, quicksand, paved footpaths), long trousers for nettles and thistles, and a face covering for interior spaces. Bring water and snacks to tide you over between tearooms. Children are welcome!

YCL General Admission: The walk is free, but registration is required Transportation (rail from London Charing Cross to Leigh, then from Hever to London Bridge costs approximately £10-18 advance each way; Oyster cards are not valid), lunch, and castle entry fees are at your own expense.

About the Event:

This ramble through Kent, the 'Garden of England', encompasses meadows, woods in autumn colours, riverbank birdwatching, and Tudor architecture, including oast houses, the hamlet Chiddingstone (entirely owned by the National Trust), Chiddingstone Castle (with Buddhist, Egyptian, Japanese, and Stuart artefacts on display), and Hever Castle (recovered from ruin by William Waldorf Astor).

The walk is roughly 8 miles long, divided into three one- to two-hour segments, with leisurely allowance for lunch at a local pub and castle visits. As usual, check the forecast and wear sensible walking shoes.
