THEATRE CIRCLE - Close Up On EVENT POSTPONED

About the Event: 

YCL Theatre Circle's new series, CLOSE UP ON..., offers members an opportunity to find out what goes on behind the scenes and behind the camera in the performing arts and moving images. The series will feature screenings,  performances and conversations with Yale alumni working in the industry as actors, directors, producers, writers and heads of departments.

CLOSE UP ON PRODUCING A STUDENT FILM is the second in our series and will feature the short films of Laura Jayne Tunbridge (YC '13) and Angela Barel di Sant'Albano (YC'20).  Laura wrote and directed DRAGGED UP while completing her screenwriting degree at the National Film and TV School. Angela co-wrote, produced and starred in IMAGE NATION with fellow Yale classmate, Solia Cates during her final year at Yale. 

Sarah is a teenage girl who doesn’t fit in within her small community on the Isle of Sheppey. Sarah’s Mum runs the local beauty pageant and pushes Sarah to become the next Queen of Sheppey, but Sarah is about as comfortable in a dress as a vegan in a sausage factory. When a new kid moves in next door, Sarah finds an ally and slowly becomes brave enough to reveal all sides of herself to the world and show her family who she truly is.

Dragged Up was selected for the Encounters Film Festival 2021 and was nominated for the Iris Prize Best British Short.

When Zoe Wilder joins IMAGE, a live-in company campus home to the most prestigious influencers in the world, she quickly befriends digital media star Sienna Mae. However, ambition threatens their friendship as they struggle to maintain personal relationships in a world desperate for social media stardom.

About the Artists: 

Angela Barel di Sant'Albano is an Italian-American actress who grew up between London and Italy. During her time in England she trained with the National Youth Theatre, LAMDA drama school, and the Pleasance Theatre Company which performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2019. She played Colin Firth’s daughter in Genius, worked on Tim Burton’s Dumbo, Joss Whedon’s new HBO series The Nevers and most recently, Alex Kurtzman’s The Man Who Fell to Earth. Her next role will be "Young Lilly" in the upcoming film about Lilly Ledbetter starring Patricia Clarkson in the titular role. 

Laura Jayne Tunbridge is a writer and director from the Isle of Sheppey. As a queer woman from a small town, Laura is inspired by stories of women living at the edges of their communities. Laura is a graduate of the National Film and Television School (NFTS), where she was a Creative Scotland Scholar. At the NFTS she wrote numerous shorts: animations Night of the Living Dread, which was nominated for the 2021 BIFA and Other Half, which was selected for competition as part of la Cinéfondation at the Cannes Film Festival 2021; the fiction shorts Requiem, starring Bella Ramsey; and Dragged Up, which Laura also directed.
